School of Mechanical and Power Engineering (SMPE) of Henan Polytechnic University (HPU) was founded on July 1946. The School can be tracked back to the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Jiaozuo Institute of Mining, the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, and finally became the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering on May 2005.
SMPE now has 6 teaching departments including departments of Mechanical Manufacture and Automation, Mechanical Design, Energy and Power Engineering, Measuring and Control Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, and a department of Mechanical Engineering Foundation. There are 6 research laboratories in SMPE including Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Institute of High Pressure Waterjet Technology, Institute of Machinery Monitoring and Fault Diagnose, Institute of Precision Engineering, Institute of Mechanical Transmission and System Simulation and Institute of Fluid Machinery Engineering. SMPE also has National Engineering Training Center and Computing Center. SMPE offers 4 undergraduate majors including Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation (including 3 professional directions -- Mechanical Design, Mechanical Manufacturing and Mine electro-mechanical), Energy and Power Engineering, Measuring and Control Instrument and Vehicle Engineering. Currently there are 146 faculties in SMPE, including 128 full-time teachers, 41 professors, 67 associate professors, 95 Ph.D supervisors.
SMPE owns 1 state-level characteristic major (Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Automation), 2 characteristic majors of Henan Province (Energy and power engineering; Technique and Instrumentation of Measurements), and 3 key discipline of Henan Province (Mechanical Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Power engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics). SMPE has built center for post-doctoral studies of mechanical engineering, doctor station of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, master degree programs of mechanical engineering, measurement technique and instrument, fluid machinery and engineering. SMPE also owns several leading laboratories including Precision Manufacturing Technology Laboratory (Key Discipline Opening Laboratory of Henan Province), Precision and Non-traditional Machining Technology Laboratory, and Coal mine Equipment Engineering Technology Center of Henan Province, High-end Equipment Manufacturing Creative Platform of Henan Province, Advanced Manufacturing technology) Innovative Research Team, and 4 Innovative Experimental Bases for Undergraduate and 2 Innovation Labs for Post-graduate have been established as well.
SMPE pays great attention to domestic and oversea academic cooperation and communication. Several national and international academic conferences has been successfully hosted, and about 70 famous scholars among the world were invited for lectures and cooperative studies. SMPE have very close relationships with many universities include THU (Tsinghua University), SJTU (Shanghai Jiaotong University), Tianjin University, HUST (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), BUAA (Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics), Muroran Polytechnic University, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) , etc.
At present, over 3000 undergraduate students, 200 full-time masters and doctorates studying in SMPE. In recent years, SMPE attach importance to the training of innovation ability of students, and obtains remarkable achievements in student scientific activities such as Challenge Cup, the Competition of Mechanical Innovative Design, Advanced Manufacturing Technology Competition and so on. From those contests, more that 30 awards and over 100 times national and provincial title of honor have obtained. In the matter of college student social practice, SMPE has won three successive advanced groups in Henan Province. The Youth League Committee obtains the title of “May Fourth Red-banner Youth League”, which has held it for seven years. Due to the progressive teaching philosophy and strict learning method of the Academy, the employment rate rises up to 98%. Large quantities of qualified graduates step into the society and has been widely praised by employers and all sectors of society.
Now SMPE has set a target to become a teaching and research-oriented school with outstanding subject feature, qualified teaching staff, scientific-normative management system, and unlimited potential within five years. To that end, SMPE adheres to the main line of talent development, discipline construction, scientific research, construction the faculty team, and to improve education quality and academic influence.
